Spiritual direction is an ancient Christian tradition where two people meet with the goal of discerning, listening, and noticing the movements of the Spirit of God in all areas and seasons of life, with the goal of strengthening your relationship with God.
Rather than provide answers, the goal of the spiritual director is to create space and ask questions that help you discern the work of the Spirit in your life and move toward intimacy with Christ in a greater way. As a spiritual director, my purpose is to help you discern both the presence and purpose of God in the midst of your struggles, successes and questions.
David Benner describes spiritual direction this way: "Spiritual Direction does not attempt to fix things. Rather than focus on problems, it focuses on spiritual longings. Instead of being reparative, it is developmental."
Since spiritual direction can be seen as spiritual companionship, it can be longer-term than counseling or coaching if you choose to make if part of your spiritual formation.
The call to ministry is costly and demanding. You might be sacrificially caring for others while finding yourself isolated and spiritually and emotionally depleted. You may even be questioning the love and character of God but feel unable to process this openly with anyone else. I have personally walked this path, and as someone who has served in ministry in both a Bible school and local church setting, I see spiritual direction as a vital formative practice for ministry leaders.
